 Shopping for Vietnam trip!!

CHALLENGES we faced:

It was difficult finding cheaper items to buy for the trip as we are on a budget. We could not buy whatever we want as we do not have enough money. We overspend on the group gift as we didn't calculate on how much we spent.

calculating the amount of money we spent since we are on a tight budget.

However, we managed to overcome it by calculating the amount of money we spent for the individual gifts. And finding the cheapest items to buy for them.

Eg: we chose to buy a box of pens which cost $2.90 instead of 5 pens which cost $5.90 .

These are some of the items we bought.

A short video of the shopping for the trip

DAY1: ARRIVAL AT HO CHI MINH

the local restaurant for lunch

Lunch at a local restaurant
Many of us are trying scrumptious local Vietnamese food for the first time. It was a different experience from what we usually eat in  Singapore. Most of the food are usually spicy and deep-fried.

Ceramic Painting
This was one of the most difficult painting we have ever done as we are afraid that we could not complete on time because we have a time limit of 30 minutes. The porcelain they sell are very exquisite as they were handmade by the workers.

Dinner at Local Restaurant

Modern Street
As we were travelling back to our hotel, we passed by this street where they sell branded goods. This street is similar to the Orchard Road in Singapore. The street was filled with colorful lighting which bought fantastic view for people to shop.

DAY2

making of crispy rice
The workers had to undergo a tough period in making these rice cakes as it requires a lot of arm muscles. It was sweet and crispy and have different type of overwhelming flavours.

mudfish catching experience
It was an unforgettable event where we have to catch fishes that  Singapore doesn't offer. The students have to step into the mud which will make their feet sink in, making it difficult to walk. Overall it was fun, though we were hesitating at first.

drying the rice papers
We witnessed the process of making the rice papers. There are many processes in making the rice papers such as the workers throwing the raw rice cakes from the roof top.

   making of rice crackers
To make these rice cracker, this lady is very well-trained and skilful as she can make it very delicious and crispy.

dinner time !!

The meal was very scrumptious. In fact, this is the best meal that we ever had so far. These dishes include lemonade chicken, papaya, tom yum soup, omelette. Overall, it was a fantastic meal.

 DAY3

well for Cu Chi tunnel
This is the place where the soldiers take water in order to survive under the low-lying ceiling tunnel with insufficient oxygen.

weapons used during the war
The Americans used extremely effective weapons.

This is similar to a pipe that can transport oxygen to different parts of the tunnel so that people can receive oxygen and will not be deprive from it.

hospital
This act as a temporary hospital which treats Vietnamese soldiers who are injured by the attack from the enemies or they might not be able to receive enough oxygen.

the saddening past of the deformed babies
The toxic chemicals were used by the Americans soldiers to attack the Vietnamese soldiers. Such chemicals include agent orange which is the most dangerous toxic chemicals used in the world. They spray about 80 million toxic chemicals, 61% were agent orange containing 366kg of dioxin which is the cause for the deformed in the babies.

trap used against the US soldiers
This trap allows the US soldiers to be mistaken, thinking that the Vietnamese soldiers are underground. However, it is a trap for them which is filled with sharp thorns that pierce through their skin when they enter it.

  demonstration of entering the tunnel
This is the original size of the Cu Chi tunnel. The worker is showing us how to enter and leave the tunnel.

DAY 4

school visit at Hong Ha Secondary School
we went to this school for a cultural exchange to know more about the differences and similarities of Singapore and Vietnam schools. For example , they stayed in school everyday and only go back to their houses during their weekends. thy also do not have very strict attire code. ie . they are allow to wear slippers in school.
teaching them our traditional games
within a few hours, we managed to make many new friends. we teached them how to play one of our traditional games, five stones. Surprisingly, they are better than us and eventually won the game against us!
explanation of how the coffee is made

our next destination  is Nam Son Coffee Workshop. At that workshop, we are able to witnessed with our own eyes on how coffee is made. We also have a chance to taste the freshly brewed ice coffee! The mixture of the condensed milk with the coffee powder make a great combination that the taste still lingers in my tongue till now.
