Post Trip Reflections

The Amazing Mekong Delta

            By Amy Chua

Throughout these 5 days, I have experienced the hospitality of the Vietnamese and their culture. By venturing from cities to Mekong Delta, I get observe the sprawling expanse of development and local way of life.

One particular site that cast a vivid impression was the Mekong Delta. This waterway brought life to the area. With its rich nutrients and sediments that fans out across 15 000 km. Local people depend on this greatly as small scale businesses such as the fishing and coconut candy making industries. Beyond the economic realm, people travel along the delta to get from one place to another via their small boats....

Despite their sparse material wealth, they have an abundance of social and environmental wealth which the government has tapped on and tried to expand it via tourism.

I learnt that even if a country may not be very developed, as long they have the heart to strive for the better and work for a better future, it will bring them far in life...

A Vietnamese's life

By Axel Yang

Throughout the 5 days,I have experienced Vietnamese culture and their way of life in the past and the present.I enjoyed the mud fish catching activity as it teaches me to step out of my comfort zone as I have to catch the fish with my bare hands which I am not used to.It also teaches me to have perseverance .When I caught the  first fish,I felt scared as the fish struggled vigorously so I let it off .When I caught the second fish,I could put the fish in the basket.

I felt pitiful of those children who suffered from Agent Orange as such effects should not happen to them.It would not be easy form them to lead normal life so they would need to be assisted. Through practice, they would be able to have some form of talent(E.g playing an instrument).I feel that a war should not use such chemicals as it would cause a lot of destruction to the environment and humanity.

I learnt that we should count our blessings that we have a pair of arms and a pairs of legs as there are those who have suffered misfortune. We should have gratitude for what we have.I have learnt that it is not easy to catch fishes in a muddy terrain as one needs to have the perseverance in order to succeed.

Hands On Mudfish Catching Activity

Throughout these 5 days of the Vietnam trip, I have truly been mesmerized by the Vietnamese culture. By venturing throughout Ho Chi Minh City, the activity that i enjoyed the most is the mudfish catching. I enjoyed this the most as we can't experienced such activities in Singapore. Though I am unwilling to participate at first, I'm glad that I have tried. Stepping into the cooling mud made me feel very refreshing. Though in the end  my whole body is covered with mud from head to toes, overall it is a great experienced that I clearly would not regret.

Visiting of The Thien Duyen Orphanage

Visiting of the orphanage have left the most impact on me. Though we only went there for less than 10 minutes, I can say that it is the most precious 10 minutes of my life. As through these few minutes, I realized a lot of things that i should be grateful about. Seeing the children at the orphanage made me realized that my life is filled with happiness and I should not take it for granted. Moreover, this is a non-government organisation which means that they have to used their own sourced of income to run this orphanage. They also rely on donations given by the locals and visitors.

Through this trip, I have learn and experienced many things that I could not
be experienced in Singapore. This trip made me realized that I should not be
unhappy with the things that I have and I should be grateful about the small little
things that I have in my life as we are not sure when they will be gone. This trip
is not only a trip full of fun activities but also a trip that is full of lessons that I
can reflect on everyday.

Visit to Vietnam
By Malcolm Ang

Throughout this 5 day in vietnam , i learnt a lot of stuff such as learning to appreciate whatever i have.  From the visit of the Thien Duyen orphanage which are those who suffered from the effects of agent orange , i learn to appreciate whatever i have . Also i learnt the effects of chemical warfare.
I enjoyed the visit to Hong Ha sec. I learnt how to interact with people who i dont know and i also get to know the education system of vietnam

  1. All in all , this trip was really an enriching and meaningful one

Meaningful trip to Vietnam

5 days of the Vietnam trip made me learnt many things and gained many experience. I enjoyed all the activities that was catered to us but what I enjoyed the most was mud fishing and the school visit. The mud fishing activity was an unforgettable moment as we were all dirty and messy throughout the activity but we enjoyed it a lot as being dirty will give us a fond memory of mud fishing and it was also an experience that not everyone can experience in their life. The school visit, however was an enjoyable activity as we got to interact with the Vietnamese students there and also make friends with them. We also get to experience their curriculum lesson and played with them our traditional games. After all, all these activities will leave as an memorable activity for us.

One thing that impacted me through the trip was going to the orphanage. I was really shocked when I saw the children there who go affected by the Vietnam war. I felt really sad and pity for them as they were not born with a perfect body unlike us. What I learnt from visiting the orphanage is that we should be grateful with what we have and make full use of it and cherish it as there are people around the world who want to do something meaningful in their life but they are unable to do so. Therefore, we should all study hard and work hard in whatever we do and help those people out there.

What I have learnt throughout this whole trip is teamwork, grateful, giving and information about the Vietnam war, etc. All these values such as teamwork are important as we have to work together as a team to do things fast and effective. The other values were all carried out in various activities. We also learnt a lot about the Vietnam war and the consequences which is an opportunity for us to learn beside the textbook. Overall, this trip was really meaningful and I enjoyed it a lot. I hope to have such experience again.

My Vietnam experience
By Cynthia Wong

During these 5 days in Vietnam, I experienced the Vietnamese way of life in the Mekong Delta. Their houses are in the water along the river, which are made from tree trunks and bricks. What I enjoyed seeing most are the markets and factories, which operates from the river. These are very different from those on land. Instead of proper shops they have a floating market, where they buy and sell things using boats. We visited a rice paper making factory, a coconut candy workshop and a crispy rice cake making factory. It was sure an eye opening experience to see how all these foods are being made. All these are the livelihoods of the locals make a living to support their family living along the river.
The next day, we went to the Cu Chi Tunnel and learnt some history of what happened during the Vietnam War period. How they hide and survive from the enemy. The impact of war on the people during that time. We gained some knowledge of Vietnam War. During the war, the U.S. soldier used chemical to attack the Vietnamese. Many people died due to the chemical bomb used, but some managed to survived but still got exposed to the chemical, which got passed down to next generation. Hence, some were born without a healthy brain, some were not able to speak properly and some of them looked different. Hence, we made a special trip to an orphanage to visit these affected people, to get a better understanding.
Those of us, with a healthy body should be grateful. We have a healthy body, parents who loves us, a family who care and support us, having a chance to go to school to learn things and making new friends. All these are the things they don't have, they cannot do whatever they want to do. The things they cannot do are just simple things in our lives. We have the chance and opportunities but we just take it for granted. We should treasure and appropriate what we have.

Vietnam Trip By: Jamie Loh

The trip to Vietnam was definitely a great experience for me as i got to learn many new things and gain a wider knowledge towards the world. Throughout the trip, we visited many places like the Minh Long Ceramics, Mekong Delta, Mud fishing,  Cai Be Floating Market, War Remnant Museum, Cu Chi tunnels, an orphanage, Nam Son Coffee workshop and we even had a school exchange!!

One thing that i enjoyed the most was the Mud Fishing activity as we had to go thigh deep into the mud to catch the mud fish. At first, i did not want to get into the mud and get dirty, however, i decided to go into the mud anyways because i would not get to experience this activity in the near future. i definitely did not regret my choice of going into the mud as we had plenty of fun in the mud, trying to walk in it and even catching fishes!! the fishes was surprisingly not slimy and they were really firm. although we all got messy and dirty during the activity, i felt that it was absolutely the thing that i enjoyed most.

One thing that left the most impact on me was the visit to the orphanage. When we visited the orphanage, i was really shocked by the sight of the children who was affected by the Vietnam war, even though they were many generations after the directly affected people. It greatly impacted me when I saw children, some almost the same age as me, but had their hands and legs tied up together with a string, and some younger children being restrained and only had to stay on their respective beds and not being able to walk around freely. It was really painful to watch them being tied up like this and my heart really sympathized with them. After the visit to the orphanage, I felt that we should treasure what we have and not complain or inflict self harm on ourselves as we should treasure having been born with a prefect body.

The learning point that i have gained through this trip is teamwork, gratitude and gratefulness. i also gained knowledge of the Vietnam war through the war remnant museum. This trip made me realise that I should be contented with what I have and not complain about what I do not have. This trip was not only a fun and enjoyable trip but also a great learning experience for me.

An Amazing Experience in Vietnam by Sarah Tay

These 5 days in Vietnam is truly an amazing and insightful experience which I miss so very much. By venturing into Ho Chi Minh City, I learnt and saw many new things through this trip that I wouldn't have gotten just through textbooks and notes and the one activity that I really enjoyed the most was the Cu Chi Tunnels. It was so fascinating to see how the people of the past lived while in the war, how they survived and preserved through it. The structure and the layout of the tunnels was very interesting to see. We even experienced going through the tunnels! It was quite stuffy and hard to move through the tunnels, however, it was an eye-opening experience for me as I get to experience a snippet of what a Vietnamese soldier's life was back then.
I do not regret going through these tunnels

One thing that left the most impression on me was the visiting of the Thien Duyen Orphanage.
The 10 minutes that we spent there in the orphanage was extremely painful and heart breaking.. I felt extremely sad and shocked when I saw the children on their beds, some were tied up on their beds and could not talk normally like us. I shed tears while I was walking through the orphanage. I felt so helpless that as a young adult, I could not help them and lighten their burdens. Through this visit to the orphanage, that there are many things in our lives that we should not take for granted our healthy bodies, our parents, our surroundings, all these things we have but others do not. With these things, many people like these children could enjoy simple things in life like walking around and even communicating with others , however, they don't have the ability to do so. We should cherish what we have in Singapore, take advantage of it , and help those in need like these children.

In this trip, I've learnt that I should be grateful and appreciative for what I have and the people around me. I learnt that teamwork is essential during this trip as we needed to work on our daily blogs everyday. This trip has truly been an amazing and fun experience. Not only is the trip enjoyable, but also I've learnt many new things and gained knowledge such as information about the Vietnam War through the War Remnant Museum.

      5 days in Vietnam 🇻🇳
120 hours in Vietnam allowed me to acquire new knowledges and experiences which I could not attain from my school textbooks. Many things happened in that period of time but the ones that impacted me the most still remains crystal-clear in my memory. The orphanage that I visited during my stay, the freaking mini size cu-chi tunnel that I went into and the local school which I visited. These were the activities that taught me that in life there will always be someone less fortunate than me and I should make good use of my opportunities to succeed in my life in order to one day help the less privileged ,in some  ways that I can. It is sad that I cannot express my feelings  fully through typing this blog and you the reader cannot apprehend exactly how I am feeling. However what matters most is that at the end of this blog, both you and I have the same mindset which is to help the people less fortunate than us. Overall this 5 days in Vietnam trip is one of my best vacations in my life and I hope that in future I can be given the chance to go on another trip similar to this.

Unforgettable Trip to Vietnam
The 5 days 4 nights spent in Vietnam was definitely something that opened my eyes out to what the world is actually like. It started when we went to the Cu Chi Tunnel where we got to experience first hand what it was like walking in the tunnel. It was easy to say, but when we got to try it ourselves, it was so tiring. I sill cannot believe how the people could do it for 20 years, when I was inside for only 10 minutes yet I felt as though it was almost the end of the world especially the days after when I had muscle aches.

We went to the orphanage where there were victims of those who came into the chemical called Agent Orange through genetics passed down for generations. They were lying so helplessly on beds which can't even be called beds because there was no mattress. Some were young but had to be tied to the bed, which made them had no freedom at all, not being able to do what they want to do and also not being able to see the outside world. It was something that made me question my life. When I have the ability to do everything yet I'm just lazy but someone who wants to do many things but is not able to. It finally made me realise that things don't come easy for them so we must really appreciate what we have.

Overall, if I had the chance to go again, I would definitely still sign myself up for this even though there were some things that ruined the mood but we still managed to learn something out from it too. Not only was it knowledgeable, some friendships were also forged too!

The trip that has taught me more than it's objective
Although this is a combine humanities trip, it taught me more than just the geographical and historical parts of Vietnam, it also taught me values such as Responsibility, initiative and gratefulness.

Through the Cu Chi Tunnel, I learnt that we have to think out of the box to succeed, the Viet Kong soldiers think out of the box to dig a tunnel to survive and defeat the American soldiers to win the war. Through this I learnt more about dark tourism, why they attract so many tourists to visit. As we travel through the Mekong Delta River, I realised how the Vietnamese made use of their land, creating more opportunities for them to earn more income from the tourists. This helps me better understand the chapter on tourism which I will be studying next year in Geography.

Visiting the Orphanage allows me to reflect on what I have that others don't and stop me from focusing on what i dont have and start to appreciate what I have, this taught me the value of Gratefulness. Keeping a blog is also quite useful come to think about it, it taught me how to work as a group, assigning different roles for different people with different characteristics, example people who are great at taking photos are our photographer, people who are better in their English help to type the content The blog also taught me what is responsibility, we have to be responsible in updating our blog daily and not do it last minutely. The teachers gave me ample opportunities to develop responsibility in me, they assign roles such as the first-aider, as in charge of everyone, those opportunities really helped me in developing responsibility, further strengthening it. Throughout the trip, we were all given chances to step up and lead the group, it helps me understand that initiative is not something hard to obtain.

This is a trip that is filled with ups and downs, lots of hiccups here and there but we still managed to pull through . There are certainly moments that we are proud of but moments we are ashamed of.For a moment you might be laughing, the next you might be crying , and later angry, but at the end of the day, i never regret joining this trip. Really hope to go back again.

Unforgettable part of the trip
The most unforgettable part of this trip is going to the orphanage as I did not expect just because of the war many people is affected by it and until now there are still many people getting affected and this has causes many people life to become different and being unable to live normally.

post vietnam trip
During the trip i have experienced a lot of how Vietnam people survive the cold war, the Cu Chi tunnel and the war remnant museum. it was an eye opening 5D 4N for me as i have learnt a new culture that i use to mistaken whenever the country Vietnam was mentioned to me.

one thing that i enjoy the most is the ceramic plate painting and the school we went to known is Hong Ha secondary school the ceramic plate painting was fun as we could paint our personal paintings on the plate. we also made it glossy so we could use them. our plates were handmade for us so we would appreciate it more. In Hong Ha secondary we were warmly welcomed by the student and principal of the school, afterward we were sitting with the rest of the vietnamese students and it was really a fruitful experience that we we got by talking to the vietnamese students one of the pupils actually told us it was really comfortable living in that school(yes the school have a boarding programme although the school looked small).

the Cu Chi tunnel was the first place we went to see how the vietnam people hide from the Americans and it was a smart strategy and they were successful in hiding from the enemy and we had the chance to go through the tunnel too and surprisingly it was quite spacious and quite ventilated, and the tunnel was big enough for us to go through too.The cold war in vietnam impacted me the most as when i saw what did USA did to the vietnam people i felt really sad and bad at the same time because the dioxin of 'Agent Orange' the viet cong was exposed to it during the war when their child is born their born deformed and made life for their parents hard and at first sight for me i teared up listening to their story and it reminded me of how a war have no profit but losses, losses of life, losses of their loves ones, well the war remnant museum was an eye opening experience because it was the photos of the vietnam people in the cold war and how different bomb affected different parts of the body pictures was shown and it wasn't a pleasant sight. Furthermore the orphanage we went was those who were affected by the 'Agent Orange' sad to say 60% of the people there have parents but i feel  that abandoning them there should not be one of their option no matter how difficult it is for the parent to take care of the child and the child borned deform still exist in vietnam  if i would say the one thing that ive learned is that war is never a way to solve a country's own interest and to never take anything for granted.-john chiow 3e4

THE 5 DAY TRIP THAT LASTS A LIFE TIME -by dickson thian

wow... where do i even start. Well, lets start with the very first day. I was- of course like everyone else, scared, nervous, absolutely overwrought by the idea of going to a place across the
ocean thoughts of 'what ifs' started coursing though my mind compelling me to step on the airport but i eventually overcame that obstacle and took the flight to Ho chin minh, Vietnam. After i set foot on the most notably capital of vietnam, i realised that maybe it wasn't all that terrifying after all, until my stomach started growling like an angry lion.
After what seems like "months of squabbling" we finally got to the place we were planning to have lunch at. we had spring rolls, fried prawns, fried chicken and fried fish it was absolutely scrumptuous overall after stuffing our faces full, we went to a ceramics showroom to see their divine pottery and plates they have some may even take years of perfecting in either to sculpt and design, but i digress, what we ended up doing was paint our designs and paintings on plates we were given as a souvenir to take back to singapore. then we proceeded to the fun part which was checking back to the hotel and *ahem* sleeping the exact things we did in the hotel  from here on out will not be specified as it is personal.
but lets talk about what really impacted me thoughout the journey it was the day we visited the battlegrounds of the vietnam war seeing these heavy artillery was really a sight to behold and meeting a real life veteran that not only survived the war BUT DODGED A TANK ROUND! although for the cost of his arm BUT A TANK ROUND! i mean at that point he Is not even a soldier but a full on superhuman it was really an experience like no other. there is actually one more experience i would like to talk about but i think i would keep that to myself. there was also the cu chi tunnels that was my favourite time of the whole the tunnels were small and compact so a person of my size would barely fit the first and second tunnels were easy and hearing the girls screaming almost put a sadistic smile on my face but on the third one were the tour guide said that it was 50 METRES i backed out. apparently hearing all the screaming from the third tunnel confirmed my great choice my friends even said that it was smaller than ever before and if i were to enter id be a cork in a bottle but eventually they all got out and it all ends well. in the end i have learnt that not all fun comes from comfort instead experiencing true fun is from being uncomfortable.

The Journey to the South of Vietnam

Honestly this trip was a lot more enjoyable than expected. At the start I was really awkward with everyone because I i didn’t know them but at the end of the 5 days i’ve got to know many of them andric wasn’t as awkward as the first day.

After touch down, we had to wait really long to go to the gate. The airport was nothing like what i expected it to be.

Day 2 of the trip was to the Mekong Delta River which was a great experience as we got to witness how the crispy rice crackers and experience mudfishing which some of us didn’t do because we weren’t mentally prepared.

Day 3 was to the Cu Chi tunnels where we say through a video screening of how the tunnels came about and the uses of the tunnels during the war. We then went to the tunnels where we went in and it was a very very tiring experience became we had to sort of crawl in the tunnels.  but overall going into the tunnels was a great experience. After the tunnels we went to the orphanage and war museum and the photons of the people who were affected by the agent orange and the war. The pictures were really scary.

Day 4 was the exchange programme with the local school in the city and it was really nice to see how the school there functions. The students were also really nice and welcoming which made the experience even better! After that we went to the local coffee business. There, we saw how they roasted and blended the coffee beans and even got to try the coffee.

Finally it was the day that we had to return back to SG. Not only was the trip extremely fun but I’ve also learnt not to take the peace in Singapore for granted because at the end of the war everyone loses because everyone gets hurt.

Tasty Vietnam trip thingy

The 5 days I spent in Vietnam were extremely enjoyable. The trip gave us many oppotunities to experience life in Vietnam, as well as showcasing us the history and the highlights of the country.

One memorable moment in the trip for me was mudfish catching. I was strangely good at it and caught the most fish out of all my other classmates. Many of my friends joked that I should remain there to become a fisherman! But I remained humble about it and tried not to show off. But seriously guys it was ONLY 10 fish.( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Another moment that stuck with me was the orphanage visit. Seeing all the children there with deformed body parts made me value life alot more woah thats deep. The owner was a sweet old lady who I respceted for using her own savings to provide a better life for these children.

Yet anothet moment that stuck with me was the Cu chi tunnel visit. It amazed me how smart the Viet Kong soldiers were able to bulit the Cu chi tunnel with nothing but simple tools. The water puppets were also very cool. The puppetiers were able to potray emotions through the strings of the puppets. The control of the puppets were on point to provide us a fantastic performance.

There were a few problems we encoutered there, such as lost items *5th day flashbacks, and also people falling sick. The latter was really fun to deal with. But if put those problems away, this trip was actually pretty good! I rate this trip 10/10 (would Vietnam again) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Vietnam Trip 2017
by Gwyneth Chiew
Throughout the 5 day 4 night enjoyable trip, i learnt and experiencing many new things. One thing i especially enjoyed the most was going to the Cu Chi tunnel. It was a really great and interesting experience going into tat tiny tunnel. Many of us were fascinated at how the soldiers were able to survive and keep up with the environment in the narrow and small tunnel. I realised how tough life was back then and learnt to cherish how fortunate i am that i have a roof to live under. Although our legs ached the next day , we all did not regret going in the tunnel.

One thing that left a great impact on me was the visit to the orphanage. When we went there we saw most of them bed-ridden and some of them stared as us with sad eyes as we walked. At that moment my heart sank and i felt very sorry for them. One girl was even locked up in a room with bars and she was really violent as she banged the metal bars. It was really disheartening to see them suffer like that. The school donated some diapers and milk to them as a gift. I learnt to cherish what i have and not complain about what i don't have as there are others out there who are less fortunate than me.

There are many things i learnt while going on this trip. Firstly , i learnt to treasure everything i have. We take things for granted and are not thankful to what we receive from others. In this trip i also learnt to be grateful for my friends who are always beside me no matter what and i learnt not to be picky about what i eat as well.

Overall it was a great trip and i hope to visit Vietnam again in the future.

VIETNAM TRIP 2017

     By Jin Ying,
One particular thing that I enjoyed the most in Vietnam is the Cu Chi tunnel. We got to know more about the history of Vietnam, how the Vietnamese soldiers have escaped from the US soldiers with the help of the Cu Chi tunnel .It was extremely interesting and exciting .This is why I was drawn into it .We also got to experience squeezing through the Cu Chi tunnel from the entrance to the exit. It was very though and tiring because the ceiling was low and we had to bend our backs through the whole tunnel. However, it was still fun and I enjoyed it a lot and we would never ever get to experience this in Singapore.

The Orphanage was the place that left the greatest impact on me. When we reached the orphanage and I first saw them , they were bedridden and their beds were all so hard. Only some of them had mattresses while some do not .The more violent ones were even locked up in a confined area, like a "cage".I felt really heartbroken at that point in time ,thinking : why must they live this way ?Did they do anything wrong to deserve this? Though we only spent a short while there, seeing them like this leaves a really great impact on me.

From this trip , I learnt many new things . However ,one of the most important things I learnt is to appreciate what we have now ,the food we have ,the friends we have, and most importantly ,our family. We often tend to waste many things and take them for granted, especially our family who takes care of us day and night. We do not even realize how many people out there who do not even have their family to care for them . Therefore, after this trip, I think we should all treasure what we have before it's all gone.

Amazing Vietnam Trip
By Charlotte Lim

Through this 5 day 4 night trip, I learnt many new things like Vietnam's history as well as forged friendships.

Day 1: We went to the Minh Long Ceramics Showroom and learnt about how delicate pottery was made as well as how it was brought about and where it's sold to.

Day 2:We went to the Mekong Delta and did many fun activities like mud fish catching and visiting the rice paper factory and seeing how traditional snacks were made. We learnt a lot about how the Vietnamese living around the Mekong Delta lived their lives around the river and how they made use of their surroundings for convenience. We also went to the night market and also learnt what it was like to bargain (some of us weren't really good...)

Day 3: We went to the Cu Chi tunnels and learnt about how the Vietnamese soldiers, the Viet Cong, dug long tunnels to their eventual victory in the war. We also had a once in a lifetime opportunity to interview a war veteran that had lost his arm during the war and learnt about how they survived in the cramped tunnels. Next, we went the War Remnant Museum where they displayed pictures and information about the Vietnam War. We learnt a lot of new information there, an example are the torture methods used by the Vietnamese on American POWs. The highlight of the day was the visit to orphanage which hit many of us right in the feelings when we walked past many children and adults affected by Agent Orange. It really got us questioning our gratefulness towards everything we already had.

Day 4: We went to Hong Ha Secondary School for a school exchange programme and had a lesson with them as well as taught them how to play traditional Singaporean games like Kuti Kuti. By the end of the school exchange programme, we made many new friends and learnt more about the Vietnamese culture in school. Next, we went to the coffee workshop where we tasted delicious milk coffee and learnt how they made it. We also played with a cute little girl while we were waiting for our coffee. After that, we went to watch a water puppet show. From that show, we learnt more about the Vietnamese culture.

Day 5: It quickly hit us that it was time for us to leave Vietnam, a bitter-sweet departure. The airplane ride back gave us time to unwind and look back on the whirlwind of events and activities that we had just went through during the past 4 days.
